Why Choose a Specialist Over a General Dentist

What Are Dentures and Prosthetics?

A denture is an intraoral device used to restore missing or lost teeth using false teeth custom-made in a dental laboratory from impressions taken of your mouth. Removable prosthetics may be held in place by suction or by being held by the surrounding muscles, while fixed dental prosthetics may be connected to neighboring teeth or dental implants.

Why Choose Dentures?

Today’s dentures are cost-effective and more comfortable and natural-looking than ever. You will be able to enjoy your favorite foods and will speak with clarity and confidence. Your restorations will help protect any remaining teeth from wear and shifting, preserving your bite. Your dentures will improve your appearance and best of all, you’ll smile with confidence once again.

Full/Complete Dentures

There are two types of removable full/complete dentures: Conventional or immediate. Conventional dentures are fitted after removing any remaining teeth, and the tissue heals. Immediate dentures, on the other hand, are prepared before removing any teeth and are positioned immediately after extraction. However, the bones and gums may shrink and change in shape during healing, meaning your dentures will likely need adjusting and relining down the road to ensure a perfect fit.

Hybrids are full arch bridges made from a variety of materials that replace a full or partial arch in the jaw. They are typically supported by four to six implants, depending on bone quality and availability. Hybrids offer an excellent solution to restore the chewing function, esthetics, and quality of life of patients missing all their teeth or only have a few teeth remaining.

Partial Dentures

Dr. Buie may recommend partial dentures when some natural teeth remain. Partials typically sit on a metal framework attached to neighboring natural teeth, or on dental crowns placed on natural teeth or implants.

Dr. Buie specializes in overdentures and implant-supported dentures. Implants can be placed in either jaw to support dentures for more confidence and better chewing and function. If four implants are placed on the upper jaw, the part of the denture covering the palate can be removed, reducing bulkiness and allowing for a better sense of taste. For the lower jaw, two or four implants can be placed to retain an overdenture. Just two implants will significantly improve the stability and support of a lower denture and will help keep bone from further resorption that continues after teeth are lost or removed.

Adjusting to Dentures

Dentures and prosthetics may require a brief adjustment period. Make sure to contact us if there are any sore or uncomfortable spots so we can adjust them. Never attempt any denture repair at home to avoid damaging your restorations.
